Friends, I've just heard from Sean Delmore who is orchestrating the 4th annual Transgender Religious Leaders Summit. The Summit will be held April 16-18, 2010 in Cambridge, MA, co-sponsored by Cambridge Welcoming Ministries, the Center for Lesbian and Gay Studies at Pacific School of Religion, and the Interfaith Coalition for Transgender Equality. The major theme for the Summit is skill-building and moving the trans religious community beyond Trans 101 into more public visibility. The gathering hopes to explore tensions between transgender folks needing to speak for ourselves -- and our community needing to deploy allies to help us make progress. Also of interest are ways we can support diverse perspectives (gender, race, class, experience, faith tradition, etc) within trans communities to be heard and visible -- without appropriating the experiences of others and speaking "for" them. There will be programming Friday night, all day Saturday, and Sunday morning, but the specifics of the schedule are still being finalized. Broad themes for the sessions are: * Session 1: Public Advocacy * Session 2: Advocacy Within & Across Faith Communities Saturday evening will feature an interfaith worship service. More details on the sessions, as they are currently sketched out, are below. There will also be a parallel track for allies, including Trans 101; being a trans ally - in public contexts and in faith contexts; accessing community resources & support; and pastoral care/support that's responsive to particular needs of the trans community. Sean is still looking for session leadership in many areas, including giving a (hopefully interactive or interesting!) presentation; facilitating a discussion; being a Q&A/brainstorming panelist, etc. Planners and worship leaders are also needed for Saturday night. Sean does have some leaders confirmed, but there's a lot of flexibility and room for others! So, if there is something that strikes your interest, please contact Sean Delmore at sdelmore (at) gmail[dot]com or (617) 899-0929. Chris Paige P.S. A small suggested donation (est. $15) will be asked of participants. Details on community housing and hotel will be available in the near future. Session 1: Public Advocacy 1. Media training from GLAAD Religion, Faith, and Values Staff 2. Panel & discussion led by trans faith leaders who have had a lot of media exposure and/or public advocacy experience 3. Public Narrative Training: Storytelling for Social Change 4. Choice of track. Participants will practice their new media and public narrative skills within the context of one of the group topics: * Organizing Faith Communities to Support Trans Rights Efforts * Using Faith Voices for Trans Advocacy When the Trans/GLBT Rights Movements Seem (Or Are!) Anti-Religion * Breaking the Fishbowl: Dealing with the personal/body scrutiny that comes with being an out trans person of faith Session 2: Advocacy Within & Across Faith Communities 1. General Resources * Curriculum Session - using/responding to HRC's & NGLTF's curriculums for trans-inclusive congregations * Other traditions’ resources (i.e. TransTorah) * Crafting what’s still needed – an opportunity to begin conversation about further trans theological development 2. Addressing the Needs of Trans Clergy/Religious Leaders -- depending on attendance, perhaps broken down into 2 groups for discussion: * clergy & those who work for religious institutions * other religious leaders 3. Choice of track for focused work on Faith Advocacy: * Creating (truly!) interfaith partnerships for support & advocacy (countering the Christian-centric focus / supporting ALL trans people) * How to survive/improve in communities that are NOT trans-affirming (Been There, Done That? How to Re-energize communities that feel like they're already trans-inclusive // Self-care – avoiding burnout, enlisting others) Instigator-in-Chief, TransFaith Network
